Tips for Face Mask Wear and Care

Tips for Face Mask Wear and Care

The CDC has recommended we all wear face coverings when in community settings, such as trips to the grocery store or pharmacy. Below are tips to help you select a face mask along with proper wear and care instructions. Please be sure to continue to practice social distancing (even when wearing a mask), frequent hand washing, avoiding touching your face, and regular disinfecting of frequently used items and surfaces.

Selecting a Face Mask

Here’s what to look for in a cloth mask.

  • A snug but comfortable fit against the face
  • Has ties or ear loops
  • Has multiple layers of fabric
  • Allows you to breathe without restriction
  • Can be laundered without damage

Wearing Your Face Mask

Follow these tips for proper wear and removal. Be sure to put on your mask before leaving your home.

  • Wash your hands before putting the mask on
  • Be sure the mask covers your entire chin (without resting on your neck) and covers your nose (fitting snuggly at the bridge)
  • Ensure there are no gaps on the sides
  • Use the loops or ties to remove the mask while being careful not to touch the front of the mask, your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Wash your hands after removing the mask

Washing Your Reusable Face Mask

Be sure to wash your mask prior to first use and regularly after that. How often will depend on how frequently the mask is used. A good rule of thumb is washing after every use. Only wear your mask after it has fully dried.

  • Machine Wash

    • Hot water with detergent
    • Hang to dry in a clean area
  • Hand Wash

    • Soak for 5 minutes in a solution of 2 Tbsp. of non-chlorine bleach per quart of water
    • Rinse well in plain water
    • Hang to dry in a clean area
